On June 21st, the summer solstice, alumni of the Class of 1991 from the Marine Engineering & Electrical Department returned to their alma mater after three decades to attend a symposium commemorating their 30th graduation anniversary and a donation signing ceremony. President Chu Beiping and Vice President Li Zhipeng (concurrently Deputy Party Secretary) attended the event.
During the ceremony, Mr. Guo Jinkui—alumnus of the Class of 1991 and Chairman of Seacon Shipping Group Holdings Limited ("Seacon Shipping")—donated RMB 20 million on behalf of the company to Shanghai Maritime University (SMU). The contribution will be allocated to the university’s "Double First-Class" Initiative Special Fund, marking the first major donation received since the fund’s establishment.
President Chu Beiping expressed profound respect and gratitude to Seacon Shipping and Mr. Guo. He emphasized that this generous act provides "the most timely and powerful support" for SMU’s "Double First-Class" development, reflecting a successful entrepreneur’s noble commitment to giving back to his alma mater and advancing education. "This donation plants a seed of hope and injects strong momentum into our 'Double First-Class' mission while setting an exemplary model," President Chu stated. He warmly welcomed the alumni and thanked them for their enduring support. Highlighting SMU’s recent achievements, he reiterated that attaining "Double First-Class" status remains the university’s core strategic goal—a challenging endeavor requiring unity among faculty, students, alumni, and society.
Vice President Li Zhipeng signed the donation agreement with Mr. Chen Zekai, Executive Director and CEO of Seacon Shipping. Mr. Guo presented the donation check to the university, and President Chu awarded Seacon Shipping a donation certificate.
Speaking as an alumnus representative, Mr. Guo fondly recalled his studies and friendships at SMU, expressing deep gratitude to the university and his mentors. He noted that SMU’s "Double First-Class" vision and innovative "Cloud Maritime University" concept have inspired alumni worldwide. "It is both our highest honor and unshirkable responsibility to contribute to our alma mater’s growth," Mr. Guo declared. He announced the additional RMB 20 million donation beyond previous contributions to accelerate SMU’s "Double First-Class" progress, expressing confidence that more alumni would support the university in diverse ways. Mr. Guo also briefed attendees on the progress of China’s first green multi-functional training vessel—a joint project between Seacon Shipping and SMU.
The ceremony concluded in a warm and celebratory atmosphere. Alumni unanimously pledged continued support for SMU’s development, expressing collective hope that the university will soon achieve its "Double First-Class" goals and renew its splendor.
